BAIA FAQ

When I meet new people, more often than not, I end up sharing information about my involvement with BAIA. Because of our approach to networking and governance, people are interested in learning more. They want to know who we are and what we do. A few basic questions tend to come up repeatedly, so I figured I would create a short Q&A and answer them here.

1. What is BAIA?
   BAIA is an independent, nonprofit business networking organization. BAIA creates tangible value for businesses by establishing a professional forum to exchange knowledge and opportunities. BAIA was founded in 2005 in San Francisco by Italian and American business professionals.
2. What does BAIA mean?
   BAIA stands for Business Association Italy America. The Italian word "baia" means "bay", a reference to the San Francisco Bay Area where BAIA was founded, as well as to BAIA's mission to be a meeting place for professionals and businesses.
3. Is BAIA a corporation?
   No. BAIA is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization.
4. How does BAIA make money?
   BAIA is a member-based organization. BAIA funds itself through membership fees, sponsorship contributions and event admission fees. BAIA does not charge for services.
5. Is BAIA a government agency?
   BAIA is NOT a government agency, nor is it funded by any governmental organization. BAIA is totally independent and apolitical.
6. I am not Italian, can I join BAIA?
   Yes. While BAIA's mission is to develop and support business opportunities between Italy and the US, BAIA does NOT discriminate on the basis of nationality. BAIA welcomes every business and individual, regardless of national origin or any other criteria.
7. I run a business. How can BAIA help me?
   By virtue of becoming part of the BAIA community, BAIA can facilitate connections with business experts, partners and customers in specific industries or geographies. Upon certain conditions, and after a review from its board, BAIA can also support directly specific projects or cooperate in activities that best fit BAIA's mission.
8. I am a business professional. How can BAIA help me?
   BAIA is a great networking community for professionals. By organizing industry panels, events, conferences and roundtables and through partnerships with local, national and international organizations, BAIA brings together experts, professionals and businesses from a broad range of industries.
9. We run a nonprofit. How can we partner with BAIA?
   BAIA has been working with and promoting, through its affiliation program, other organizations and nonprofits that share BAIA's vision, operate in a similar context, or share similar challenges. An important requirement to collaborate with BAIA is to share its vision of an open, non-exclusive community.
10. In which business sectors does BAIA operate?
    BAIA's focus is not sector specific. The BAIA community brings together business, organizations and individuals from 12 different industry sectors:
